Meet Our Leadership Team

Ernie Catherwood

In 1971, Ernie Catherwood started Ernie’s Towing with a small wood-hulled tugboat call ‘Sea Imp’. This was just the first in a fleet of tugboats that have been either custom built or purchased by what is now known as Catherwood Towing Ltd. (CTL).

He began his career log booming and towing, assisting various vessels in the Mission area, and towing the occasional barge. Due to the impact of BC’s ever changing forest industry, Ernie began looking into other industries that needed the services of CTL. Under his direction, CTL has significantly evolved. CTL’s primary business has changed to the transportation of marine construction equipment, barging of construction materials and general freight. CTL continues to provide log towing and storage, never forgetting where he “cut his teeth”.

In 1993 Ernie launched Catherwood Transportation, a subsidiary of CTL. Catherwood Transportation owns and operates a cable ferry on Ootsa Lake, transporting logging trucks, much needed crew and goods back and forth across the Nechako Reservoir.  These types of innovative solutions have allowed CTL to expand and enter new markets.

Ernie, along with his highly skilled support staff and sea-going crew, have managed to grow CTL from a single tugboat to an ever-growing fleet. Tugboats, several barges and numerous purpose-built vessels facilitate general towing throughout the coast of British Columbia into its inland waterways. CTL employees have grown from a handful of skilled people at its inception, to a staff of over 90 today.
